What It Won't Do
The eufyCam S4 is not subtle. George Langabeer called the triple-lens body and its large 5.5W solar panel bulky and obnoxious to mount on a house, and he was frustrated that initial motion detection tops out around 30 to 40 feet, which bites when the camera sits 20 feet in the air. He also rated eufy's tech support poorly and warned that the -4°F cold rating may not hold up in the harshest winter climates.
The TP-Link Tapo Mag Cam 4K, sold as the C460, delivers the flagship features that matter most for roughly half the price of the eufyCam S4. Steve DOES called it hands down the best 4K outdoor camera at its price, with a true 8MP sensor sharp enough to read a license plate and Starlight color night vision that stays usable in near-darkness.
Its standout trick is 24/7 recording. A 10,000mAh battery and bundled solar panel let it take continuous snapshots all day, which LifeHackster and Steve DOES were both amazed it could sustain without draining. LifeHackster even used that continuous mode as a camera-based motion detector and got reliable alerts out to 55 feet, further than the premium eufy managed on its standard detection. On-device AI kept false alarms from shadows and branches at zero.
You give up mechanical pan-tilt-zoom and you need a sunny mounting spot, but for a buyer who wants premium 4K clarity and always-on recording without a subscription, the Tapo delivers the most performance per dollar in this group.
What It Won't Do
The Tapo leans hard on sunlight. LifeHackster stressed that its standout 24/7 snapshot mode needs at least two hours of direct sun every day, and if you switch that mode off to save battery in a cloudy spot, the camera falls back to a PIR sensor he described as not really that great, which shortens its range. At night it also defaults to black-and-white infrared for snapshots unless the yard already has some ambient light.
